Background

Comfort Inn, a well-established brand in the hotel industry, is part of the Choice Hotels family. This brand has been trusted by travelers for nearly 40 years and is known for its commitment to providing comfortable and affordable lodging options. Comfort Inn has a significant presence with over 2,100 hotels open worldwide, offering amenities such as complimentary breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and access to fitness centers or swimming pools in most locations. The brand recently underwent a transformation, updating guest rooms and public spaces, along with a new logo, to enhance the guest experience. Comfort Inn's focus is on delivering a consistent, warm, and welcoming experience to both business and leisure travelers, maintaining its position as a go-to choice in the upper midscale segment of the hotel industry.

Objective

Comfort Inn Hotel embarked on a socially responsible initiative in partnership with the state of New Hampshire. The hotel played a pivotal role in a state-sponsored program aimed at providing temporary housing for homeless individuals. Under this program, the state compensated Comfort Inn for accommodating these individuals, offering them a safe place to stay as they worked towards regaining stability and getting back on their feet. This initiative not only showcased Comfort Inn's commitment to community welfare but also presented unique operational and security challenges, given the diverse needs and backgrounds of the individuals being housed.

Solution

To address the unique security needs of Comfort Inn Hotel during their participation in the New Hampshire state program for homeless individuals, CGSS proposed deploying an armed guard. This decision was based on the need for a strong security presence to ensure the safety and orderliness of the hotel environment.

The armed guard's responsibilities included conducting both interior and exterior patrols around the hotel premises. A key focus of these patrols was to ensure that there were no illicit drugs on the property. The guard was also tasked with preventing altercations or fights and restricting access to unwanted guests. This comprehensive approach aimed to maintain a secure and peaceful environment for all hotel guests, including those part of the state-sponsored program, ensuring the hotel continued to operate smoothly and safely during this period.

Results

The deployment of an armed guard by CGSS at the Comfort Inn Hotel proved to be highly effective in managing the complex security challenges that arose during the hotel's participation in the New Hampshire state program for housing homeless individuals. The presence of the guard was instrumental in handling various situations, including instances of individuals attempting to bring drugs onto the property, breaking up fights, and dealing with unwanted visitors.

Each day presented its own set of challenges, particularly in managing behaviors that were disruptive or non-compliant with the hotel's standards. The guard played a crucial role in maintaining order and ensuring that all guests, including those part of the state program, behaved appropriately.

Furthermore, the guard worked closely with local law enforcement to address issues related to illegal drugs. This collaboration was key in preventing the influx of such substances onto the hotel premises. As a result of these concerted efforts, CGSS successfully maintained peace and order at the Comfort Inn Hotel, ensuring the safety and well-being of all guests and staff. This security detail was marked as a success, effectively upholding a secure and hospitable environment during a period of heightened operational complexity
